Ellen out on a date She modestly accepted Eventually the two had unbreakable feelings for each other and went outUnfortunately Tom was shipped out to England before the two of them were engaged, and they both felt miserable Tom s first time in action was not bad considering he had just joined His first encounter with the Germans was victorious, and a year or so went by and Tom was named a Sergeant With some close calls Tom had good victorious battles against the Germans One year however, Tom was ordered to scout an area of where the Germans were at When Tom came back to tell his comrades how the Germans were advancing he was found shot in the left arm.As his regiment charged the Germans with hate and anger Tom s horse was shot and killed in a field As Tom got up to shoot at the Germans, he felt a sudden pain in his calves He looked down at his legs and saw five or six holes in his legs He faced the Germans sitting down behind his horse for cover and then everything went black Tom ended up in a hospital and as soon as he was healed he headed for home.In this amazing novel, written by Robert Mackay, there were so many suspenseful parts and chapters that made me want to keep reading it Mackay did a great job starting the book off with a boy who eventually gets sent to the army He was very smooth in the transitions of each chapter He had a unique way of telling this story It felt like it was so real Reading this book made me not only want to read itbut it drawed me into to it, like I was in the war itself.If you are a person who likes categories such as War, romance, and suspense, I would say this is definitely the book for you Historical facts from WW1 as recounted from diaries, this novel has a ring of truth from a young recruit who was there Well researched, would recommend for anyone interested in topics of foot soldiers, horses in battle from personal accounts. A Canadian author writes a compelling story about a Canadian soldier in one of the last cavalry charges of WWI Good research and characterization in this very readable novel that helped me understand this aspect of warfare and relate to Tom, the protagonist It s gritty and violent, but so human, and with good tension and pacing This novel won the IPPY gold medal.Highly recommended for those who read historical military fiction.
